Greggs launches vegan sausage roll for Veganuary

Following months of rumours and requests from shoppers, Greggs is launching a vegan-friendly version of its sausage roll.

Rolling out to selected stores from tomorrow, the product is described as having 96 layers of light and crisp puff pastry and a bespoke Quorn filling.

It will be available in 950 of Greggs’ 1,900 shops across the country, and will be priced from £1.

The launch follows many calls from consumers for a vegan Greggs sausage roll, including a petition by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) last year, which was signed by more than 20,000 people.

“Like many food retailers we have seen increasing demand for vegetarian and vegan products,” explained Greggs chief executive Roger Whiteside.

“We have been trying to develop a vegan version of our famous sausage roll for some time now. It has not been easy, but our taste panel customers all love this one, so we have decided to launch it as our contribution to Veganuary.”

First launched in 2014, Veganuary is a month-long celebration of veganism.

In November, Greggs said it was expecting to make a full-year profit of £86m. Total sales across the food-to-go firm’s retail outlets rose 9% year-on-year in the eight weeks to 24 November 2018, compared with an 8.2% rise in the same period last year. Like-for-like sales in company-managed shops increased 4.5%.
