Greggs has unveiled its third ‘bitesize’ store and remains on track to open around 120 net new shops in 2025.
Located in Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet in Ellesmere Port, the latest addition to the Greggs estate follows the opening of other bitesize sites at Sevenoaks Railway Station in November and Dartford Station earlier this month.
These form part of a trial first announced in July that assesses customer response and operational efficiencies in the new smaller, more agile format which enable the food-to-go retailer to enter more prime locations – mostly travel hubs – previously out of reach due to size constraints.
Despite operating with a smaller footprint, Bitesize Greggs offers a tailored range of best-selling customer favourites at the same prices, from sausage rolls and steak bakes to sweet treats and Fairtrade hot drinks.
The new Cheshire Oaks site will also serve the seasonal favourite, Festive Bake, which recently returned to menus nationwide. It is open seven days a week and has created 15 new jobs for the local area.
“This busy shopping destination is a great location to continue to trial our new format to reach more customers on the go from compact units, whilst still offering a selection of our best-selling products,” commented Greggs property director Tony Rowson.
“We have a number of other ‘Bitesize Greggs’ openings planned, initially on a trial basis, as part of our broader estate growth plans and we look forward to announcing these in due course,” he added.
As noted in Greggs Q3 trading update, the 120 net new shops in 2025 is fewer than its previously planned estate expansion of between 140 and 150, and marks a slowdown of growth from the 144 added last year.
As of 27 September 2025, Greggs traded out of a total of 2,675 shops comprising 2,096 company-managed sites and 579 franchised units.
Pret is also looking to grow its footprint via travel hubs, most recently partnering with motorway services operator Roadchef on two new sites either side of the M5 in Worcestershire. Pret was up to sixth place in the Bakery Market Report 2025 list, behind Subway, Starbucks, and The Nero Group.
