A team of employees from bakery supplier Bako Group has successfully scaled Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of national charity Dementia UK.

Bako said the ascent of Africa’s tallest peak exemplified its commitment to making a meaningful difference in the community. It was a key event in the year-long celebrations of its 60th anniversary, with other fundraising activities held this year including 1960’s themed baking competitions and the exclusive product launch of its Select Raspberry Trifle Slice.

The Bako Kilimanjaro Challenge team comprised Lucy John, Joanna Walaszczyk, Marta Skomoroko, and Ian Best. Supported by local guides, they set off from Nale Moru Village in Tanzania and trekked more than 100km over seven days through maize and potato fields, and rainforests, before hiking up the volcano, which stands 4,900m above the plateau base.

Unfortunately, Best suffered from low oxygen levels at the final stage and made the decision to stay back for his own safety rather than reaching the snow-capped summit with the rest of the team. “The toughest part was dealing with the headaches and dizziness from the high altitude,” he said. “But the contrast between the barren landscape up high and the lush rainforest below was awe-inspiring. This trek has been enlightening and joyful, pushing me out of my comfort zone.”

Walaszczyk called it one of the toughest physical challenges she’s ever faced, especially the ‘summit night’ which involved them setting off for the eight-hour climb to the summit in freezing conditions at midnight. “The stark contrast in temperatures and the altitude pushed me to my limits, but the friendships, culture, and the mental detox made it all worthwhile. I’ll never forget brushing my teeth under a sky full of stars and the Milky Way,” she added.

Bako had announced a fundraising target of £60k for Dementia UK back in April, which accompanied news of its acquisition of Northern Irish ingredients firm Finlay’s Foods. The supplier revealed that “significant funds” had already been raised, but urged the community to continue supporting their charity efforts to help raise even more.

“We are grateful for the incredible support so far,” commented CEO Michael Tully. “But our journey isn’t over yet – helping Dementia UK means so much to us, and we hope everyone will join us in making a difference.”
