The Delicious Dessert Company has rolled out a range of yum yums with flavours including Chocolate Orange, Millionaire’s, and Strawberry Funfetti.
Priced at £2.50 for packs of two square-shaped yum yums, the NPD has gone on sale in Tesco stores nationwide. It follows last month’s launch of the company’s limited edition ‘King of Eclairs’, created to help celebrate the coronation of King Charles III.
The Chocolate Orange Yum Yums are topped with chocolate and orange fondant, hand-finished with orange curls. Meanwhile, the Millionaire’s Yum Yums are coated in salted caramel sauce and finished with biscuit balls and milk chocolate curls. Lastly, the Raspberry Funfetti Yum Yums are topped with fruity raspberry fondant and funfetti sprinkles.
The Delicious Dessert Company’s head of insight Claire Smith said the new products will “deliver on the more adventurous and interesting taste sensations people are looking for”. This referred to results from research conducted by the business into the UK’s favourite flavours and combinations for dessert items.
According to the poll of 2,000 adults, chocolate and caramel have replaced summer fruits as the essential flavour of summer this year. When it came to sweet treats, salted caramel came out on top named by 28% of those polled as the flavour they most wanted to indulge in over the May Bank Holiday weekend, followed by triple chocolate with 21% of the vote and chocolate orange with 20%.
The research also revealed that old and young generations had opposing tastes when it came to enjoying a sweet summer snack. Over 55-year-olds were discovered to be advocates of uncomplicated single flavours – such as vanilla, lemon or strawberry.
In contrast, the under 25s found excitement from mixing different flavours. All the top choices for the under 25s comprised of combinations of flavours, such as mint with chocolate, chocolate with orange and salted caramel.
A representative sample of under 25s were presented with 30 flavours and asked to come up with dream combinations they would love to try. Of the 200 different flavour fusions identified, the top 10 choices were revealed to be:
- Caramel and milk chocolate
- Strawberries and white chocolate
- Strawberries and whipped cream
- Whipped cream and white chocolate
- White caramel and banana
- Strawberries and caramel
- Milk chocolate and cookies
- Dark chocolate and orange
- Caramel and cookies
- Caramel and white chocolate
“Young people want moments of fun and excitement from their sweet treats and they really like to combine or contrast different flavours,” Smith commented. “What has for some time become the norm with ice cream we are now bringing to the world of desserts, with exciting flavour combinations that allow us to offer people modern twists on classic products.”
