An entrepreneur is planning to give away 75% of a start-up business to a young baker or chef.
The start-up afternoon tea delivery service, called Cakery Wonderland, is an in-house venture created by baking kit supplier Britain Loves Baking, which states it “aims to help create a world where no one goes hungry”.
Launched in June 2020, Britain Loves Baking says it has donated more 10,000 baked goods to the homeless in Leicester and has given a free mindful baking box to more than 4,000 people who suffer with their mental health.
Cakery Wonderland was set up with a loan provided by Britain Loves Baking founder Greg Wixted, who is described as a serial entrepreneur and lecturer in entrepreneurship.
Wixted is planning to give away a 75 % share of Cakery Wonderland, which he says was profitable within four months, to a young person who wants to run their own business and is “passionate about finding ways to help eradicate food hunger and poverty”.
“We firmly believe in putting people and purpose before profits and shareholders,” said Wixted.
“If we are to help end food poverty, we need to embrace new business ideas like this one. We need to invest in helping purpose-driven food entrepreneurs who will go on to help others and help create a world where no one goes hungry.”
Applicants for the role, which is described as “not a job offer, one applicant will become owner and director from day one”, are welcome from anyone over the age of 18 and with 18 months to two years of baking or catering experience, formally or informally. Applications close on 12 November.
Successful candidates will take part in a challenge bake-off, with the final candidate spending a paid week in the business before delivering a final pitch on their vision for Cakery Wonderland.
The new owner will get three months’ business training and will have their own kitchen in Britain Loves Baking’s London production facility for up to a year, along with access to their supply chain and suppliers. The chosen applicant will be mentored by Wixted and his team.
Like Britain Loves Baking, Cakery Wonderland will put 10% of its revenue to fund grants for disadvantaged young people with purpose-driven, food-based business ideas.
