Best organic Danish rye in London is named

An organic 100% rye Danish loaf made by Notting Hill Real Bread bakery SNAPS + RYE was named ‘The Londoners’ Loaf’ at the Urban Food Awards during The Urban Food Feast at Borough Market on 25 September.

The Urban Food Awards are a celebration of the very best food and drink produced in the capital by companies with 50 employees or fewer. It is organised by City Hall and the charity Sustain’s London Food Link in a bid to promote the best of the city’s local larder.

Following nominations from Londoners, the winners were chosen by a judging panel, chaired by London Food Board chair Rosie Boycott, which included chefs Rowley Leigh and Ollie Rowe, while The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, joined to help judge the cheese category.

The Mayor said: “I congratulate all the winners and those nominated for what has been a hugely successful competition. What it unquestionably shows is when it comes to top-notch grub and high-quality beer, nobody does it quite like London.”

The Londoners’ Loaf category saw the most public nominations - more than 400 for more than 20 Real Bread bakeries.

The winner, SNAPS & RYE, claims to be London’s only Danish restaurant, serving items including freshly baked organic sourdough rye bread, home-cured herring and house-infused akvavit from breakfast through to dinner.
The runners-up were Real Bread Campaign supporter microbakeries Ma Baker of Fulham and Elephant Bakehouse in Streatham.

In addition to the size of enterprise and location of the bakery, a basic criterion for The Londoners’ Loaf nominees was that it had to be Real Bread, as defined by the Real Bread Campaign.
