Village Bakery has had enquiries from the US for its Welsh cakes following a Royal visit from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The bakery has received more than a dozen calls from American retailers interested in stocking the cakes following Markle’s Royal seal of approval during a visit to Wrexham, Wales, yesterday (18 January).

The couple, who are due to marry at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle on 19 May, were served by Village Bakery’s account manager Thomas Kellaway, who said Markle loved the Welsh cakes so much that she asked if she could take some back home with her.

“She introduced herself as Meghan and said it was her first Welsh cake. Meghan then asked if she could take some home with her and they were included in a hamper of Welsh produce that they were given,” said Kellaway.

“She asked if the Village Bakery was a family-owned company and was impressed when I said it was and that it had been going for more than 80 years.”

Kellaway added that one of the highlights of the Royal visit was Prince Harry revealing that he puts Marmite on his crumpets.

“Our crumpets are very versatile but I’ve never heard of that particular combination before,” added Kellaway. “But I’m certainly going to give it a try. It could become a new craze.”

Village Bakery is no stranger to royalty after the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall officially opened its £4m Baking Academy and Innovation Centre in July 2015.
