Rowe’s branded savoury bakery concession, introduced in July at Asda, St Austell (Cornwall), has beaten pre-opening sales estimates, with weekly figures up to 40% higher than predicted.

Maple Leaf results
Canadian company Maple Leaf saw earnings in its Bakery Group increase to $32.7m in the third quarter compared to $30.6m the previous year. Lower commodity costs and improved margins in North America drove the increase in earnings.

West Cornwall Pasty Co has opened a new store in the centre of Colchester taking its retail estate to 64.

Egg research
Just 2% of consumers buying quiches, cake, sandwiches, Scotch eggs or mayonnaise expect them to contain imported eggs, according to research from British Lion Eggs, but at least a third of these products are made using foreign egg products.

UK high street sales grew modestly in the year to October, and at the most positive rate in almost two years, according to the CBI. Chairman Andy Clarke said: "The latest data shows the economy is still in recession, but the retail sector seems to be finding its feet again after a challenging year.

Tango’s triumph
Soft drinks manufacturer Britvic has announced that Tango is the fastest-growing fruit carbonate in its category. It has added 1 million litres to overall soft drinks sales, with consumer preference for the brand up by 8%. Marketing this year included activity on the limited-edition 400ml can of Tango Orange.
