Weights guidance

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has published guidance for businesses to accompany The Weights and Measures (Specified Quantities) (Unwrapped Bread and Intoxicating Liquor) Order 2011. The amendment to the law, set come into force on 1 October 2011, would see a lifting of all restrictions on the quantities that may be used for the sale of unwrapped bread.

Action for homeless

Pret A Manger has recruited 25 homeless apprentices to mark its 25th birthday. In the three-month scheme, with a view to becoming permanent, the recruits get full pay and benefits, while Pret will also give them £100 for work clothes, as well as paying their travel to and from work and helping them set up bank accounts.

Growing concerns

A new survey commissioned by the Food Standards Agency found that consumer concern about the amount of salt, fat and sugar in food has grown. In the study, 50% of consumers said expressed concern about salt (up from 45% last year), 44% were worried about fat (40% last year) and 41% mentioned sugar (30% last year).

Vehicle height worry

Bakery transport firms are concerned that European Commission proposals to limit the height of UK trailers could change their working practices. The Freight Transport Association wants to protect the current systems, which gives UK operators the right to operate trailers above four metres.

Loaves not bread

In a story on Exquisite Handmade Cakes in 15 July issue British Baker incorrectly stated that the bakery made breads. This was incorrect; it makes loaves aka loaf cakes.
