Denmark implements first saturated fat tax

Denmark has introduced what is believed to be the world’s first ’fat tax’ on products such as pizza and pastries. Foods that contain more than 2.3% saturated fat are now subject to a tax of £1.84 per kilo of fat in a governmental move to encourage healthier eating.

Carbon Trust ends interest-free loans

The Carbon Trust has scrapped interest-free loans to SMEs for energy-saving equipment following funding cuts. Loans will now be subject to commercial rates of interest.

New lines for Pidy

Pidy has launched 14 new products as it diversifies into decorations supply alongside its pastry products. New lines include ’crumbles’ in strawberry, chocolate-coated, American cookie, meringue drops and full butter shortbread versions. The firm is also set to launch an additional 50 products through Amazon before Christmas, taking its range with the online retailer up to 95 lines.

Quiznos struck off

American sandwich chain Quiznos’s UK business was struck off Companies House and dissolved at the end of September. In August, British Baker reported that the firm had been facing financial woes. The company, which peaked at 29 UK outlets in 2008, closed its head office in Hove at the start of 2011 and was seeking a new master franchisee.
