National frozen bread supplier Lantmännen Unibake UK organised a hands-on Halloween bakery class for visually impaired and blind children to support the Berkshire Country Blind Society.
Primary and secondary schoolchildren were invited to the company’s development kitchens to make scary cake pops. Working with volunteers, they decorated them with brightly coloured icing to make them look like pumpkins and witches.
Lantmännen’s innovations project manager Fiona Jones, who helped organise the day, said: “Children love baking, but for those who are visually impaired or blind, handling ingredients, feeling the textures, smelling the aroma and, of course, tasting the end result is particularly rewarding. The bakery day is one way in which we can put our charity work into action. It’s a great day for everyone involved.”
The company has worked closely with the Society since acquiring sweet and savoury pastry and speciality bread manufacturer Bakehouse in 2010. It provides an annual cash donation to help fund activities and cooking days for children to provide memorable experiences.
