All-day Danish bakery firm Ole & Steen is trialling a ‘Grab & Go’ concept at its recently opened location in Canary Wharf’s Jubilee Place Mall.

Catering to the high-traffic commuter area, the new initiative aims to create ultimate convenience during lunchtimes and peak rush hours, the company said.

The ‘Grab & Go’ range offers an assortment of Ole & Steen’s freshly baked pastries, sweet treats, breakfasts and lunches, all pre-packed for customers ‘wanting their daily dose of hygge on the go’. Hygge, pronounced “hoo-guh”, is a Danish word that describes a mood of cosiness with feelings of wellness and contentment.

“We are thrilled to further support customers on the move with the launch of our new ‘Grab & Go’ concept at Jubilee Place,” said Ole & Steen managing director Lee Nixon. “With its vibrant and bustling business community, Canary Wharf is the perfect place for us to trial the new offering, and we will be monitoring how well the new concept performs, with the hopes of rolling it out across all of our bakeries in the UK.”

The trial launch is the latest part of Ole & Steen rapid expansion plans, having doubled its amount of UK stores since 2020. Over the past two years, the company has opened 14 bakeries in London and surrounding areas, including Notting Hill Gate, Chiswick, Hampstead, Seven Dials, Northcote Road, Windsor, Guildford, Greenwich, London Wall and Jubilee Place.

This has helped generate significant employment opportunities. Between March 2020 and February 2023, the number of employees across its bakeries increased by 175%, from 251 to 690. Following the Canary Wharf opening in March, Ole & Steen opened its 26th bakery in the heart of Kingston-upon-Thames.

Grab-and-go formats appear to be gaining popularity among smaller bakery chains in recent months, with Two Magpies Bakery rolling out their takeaway service earlier this year.
