Historic flour brand Wessex Mill is to cease production at the end of the year after being acquired by Doves Farm Food.
The Oxfordshire-based business, which was established in the 1800s and mills a large range of flours using local wheat at its Mill Street site in Wantage, is currently run by the fourth and fifth generations of the Munsey family.
Paul Munsey, managing director at Clarks (Wantage) Ltd, described the decision to close the mill as “difficult” but added, “We are very pleased to have been able to transfer the brand to another family flour mill, who will continue the tradition of milling local grains in the North Wessex Downs.”
In a statement, Doves Farm Food confirmed the transfer would take place in late Autumn.
Under its plans, Wessex Mill will be added to Dove’s existing line-up of brands, comprising Freee (gluten-free food and flour) and Doves Farm (organic food and flour).
“Wessex Mill has an excellent reputation for milling the finest quality award-winning flour from locally sourced grain and serving discerning customers across the UK,” Clare Marriage, CEO of Doves Farm Foods, said.
“We are excited to take on the brand to continue this tradition and bring it to even more bakers up and down the country.”
