London-based bakery Bread Ahead has opened its new school in Borough Market with a launch day.
The school opened on Saturday (22 February) at Jubilee Place, London, and the day featured demonstrations by baker Justin Gellatly and Aidan Chapman, founder of the Phoenix Bakery, Weymouth.
Courses at the school will focus on traditional baking and pastry skills for established bakers and amateurs, and “core skill modules for local schoolchildren” will soon be added to the schedule.
An area will also be devoted to making gluten-free products, as well as a library of baking as a resource for bakers and students.
Matt Jones, founder, said: “This is the first time I’ve opened a bakery school. We like to think of this as the beginning of something quite spectacular. It’s a big thing, a big step.”
Additionally, Gellatly showed the bakery’s new doughnut range, while Chapman hosted a talk on the benefits of baking your own bread.
On Twitter, Gellatly revealed that doughnut flavours will include caramel custard & salted honeycomb sprinkle, vanilla & lemon curd, rhubarb jam, and custard.
