The Real Wrap Co is recalling a total of 101 ready-to-eat products including sandwiches, wraps, paninis, rolls, toasties, croque monsieurs, and salads due to possible presence of listeria.
A food alert by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) stated that the Bristol-based supplier was taking the precautionary action of recalling the products because of the possible presence of listeria monocytogenes.
It comes within a month of another listeria-related recall issued by Bread Spread Ltd in Southall, West London, for its range of ready-to-eat baguettes, French sticks, sandwiches, rolls, and wraps.
Symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea, stated the alert, adding that, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis. Older people, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to listeria infections.
The FSA alert noted that the recall only affects The Real Wrap Co’s products sold at retail stores in health care settings. The company, which was acquired by manufacturing giant Samworth Brothers in April, also supplies its range of chilled and frozen food-to-go products to customers in the travel sector, as well as foodservice, coffee shops, and other convenience retail outlets.
Several of the affected wraps, sandwiches and rolls are under the Urban Eat brand, which was acquired by Samworth Brothers in 2020. Other bakery brands among the Samworth portfolio include Ginsters and Soreen.
The Real Wrap Co recall includes retailers instructed to remove and safely dispose of any product listed (see below) with point of sale notices to be displayed in stores. Consumers are advised not to eat them and return them to where they were purchased for a refund.
The Real Wrap Co has been approached for comment.
