Lancashire bakery Holland’s Pies has been delivering pies by drone to mark British Pie Week.
Blackburn residents had been given the chance to enter a competition to have a collection of pies delivered by drone to their homes.
The pies took flight this week, and were flown 200 feet in the air across the Blackburn skies to make doorstep drops.
“At Holland’s, we’re always looking for new and innovative ways to bring pies and smiles to our loyal customers,” said Holland’s Pies brand manager Leanne Holcroft. “Our British Pie Week 2023 competition has generated exactly the reaction we hoped for – and who knows, maybe Pies in the Sky could be the future of our delivery service?”
Holland’s pointed out that the drone flights had been conducted in line with Civil Aviation Authority regulations and that all relevant parties, councils and landowners had been consulted with beforehand.
The pies delivered by drone were from Holland’s Dining In twin pack range that was launched to cater to the growing ‘dining-in’ trend. Available in Steak & Gravy, Chicken & Gravy, Chicken Balti, and Peppered Steak varieties, they are listed in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, and Iceland stores nationwide.
Holland’s said it expects the dining-on category to grow as consumers continue to feel the effects of the cost-of-living crisis. It added that the Dining In range increases the brand’s presence in the frozen aisle.
Holland’s started out as a baker’s shop in Lancashire in 1851 and now bakes more than 900,000 pies a week and employs around 250 people. It is currently part of 2 Sisters Food Group, although 2 Sisters has been reported to be seeking a buyer for its bakery businesses.
Running from Monday 6 March to Sunday 12 March, British Pie Week is the annual celebration of the pie, giving makers an opportunity to promote their products.
