UK bakery chain Cooks The Bakery is following in the footsteps of Jamie Oliver and has opened up a ’healthy’ canteen in a comprehensive school.
The school in Maidenhead, Berkshire, has reported that the new school meals have been so successful that servings have increased from 50 to 900 per day.
The menu sticks to rigid government guidelines. It includes baguettes, brown plaits, seeded rolls and sandwiches, paninis with spicy meatball, fresh pasta with a choice of sauces, vegetable pots with tasty dips and a range of fresh salads, sandwiches, water, smoothies and milk.
The school is a mixed comprehensive, with around 900 pupils aged 11-18 and 130 staff. The canteen works on a self-serve basis, as around 1,000 people are fed within 25 minutes.
The pupils pay for their meals using a cashless card system, which their parents can top up at the tills or on the internet.
A board of sixth formers from Cox Green School worked with Cooks The Bakery on the project.
