Nottingham-based bakery The Bakehouse will donate its unsold bread to the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum (NNRF).
The link-up with the Refugee Forum sees the bakery’s team wrap up any unsold bread each night, ready for collection, ensuring that the produce is not wasted and is enjoyed by refugees and asylum seekers in the community.
The Bakehouse’s owners Craig Poynter and his wife Rosea, who set up the partnership, told British Baker the company’s core values were not to waste anything and to support local causes.
“We’re delighted to be able to avoid food wastage by helping people on our doorstep, and look forward to this partnership continuing and expanding,” said Poynter. “We’re committed to playing a role within the local community and are keen to support the vital work carried out by the Refugee Forum, which is less than a mile away from our premises.”
The NNRF is an independent voluntary organisation, set up in 2000 to offer practical advice, information, support and friendship and also campaign on issues affecting refugees and asylum seekers.
Gemma Pillay, destitution coordinator at NNRF, said that The Bakehouse’s donations were making a real difference in the lives of its service users and thanked the team for their committed support.
