What does it take to be top of the supermarket shelves this Christmas? British Baker enlisted the help of Mark Legg from Dunn’s Bakery, and Charlotte Green, founder of cake company Langs of London to taste and judge this year’s Christmas cake showstoppers.

Held at British Baker HQ, our judges took part in a blind taste test, marking each cake on its appearance (out of 10), texture (out of five), and taste (out of five), generating a combined score out of 40.

Entries included: Tesco’s Finest Iced Rich Fruit Cake (£13.00); Asda’s Extra Special 3 Month Matured Brandy Soaked Magic of Christmas Cake (£12.00); Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Reindeer Iced Rich Fruit Cake (£16.00); Fiona Cairns White Rose Christmas Cake for Waitrose (£35.00); Marks and Spencer’s Collection Ultimate Enchanted Forest Cake (£20.00); and Morrisons Signature Shimmering Bauble Brandy-soaked Fruit Cake (£8.99).
