The Earl of Sandwich sandwich shop brand is set to be rolled out, following a pilot in the city of London.

The company, a partnership between the 11th Earl of Sandwich John Montagu and Planet Hollywood founder Robert Earl, was launched in the US in 2004 and opened its first UK shop in Ludgate Hill in 2011.

Earl Enterprises managing director Alex Garland told British Baker that a second outlet was due to be announced imminently, either in London or outside the Capital.

Further UK sites in areas with high footfall, such as airports, motorways, shopping malls and stations, are being sought, he said, with the Earl of Sandwich concept likely to be franchised out.

He commented: “The concept works very well in the right location - high footfall areas where people have a bit of time to spend.”

Garland said he was keen to emulate the success of Earl of Sandwich in the US, where the most popular of the 24 Earl of Sandwich outlets - at Disneyland in Orlando - turns over $10m annually.

The Earl of Sandwich claims to sell the World’s Greatest Hot Sandwich and Garland said the concept has been described as a “posh Subway”, with high-quality ingredients such as topside of beef used in its sandwiches.

Bread is currently supplied to the London store by artisan Crazy Baker Sophie Grey.

The range includes The Original 1762 (roast beef, cheddar dheese and horseradish sauce) and the Earl’s Club (roast turkey, smoked bacon, aged Swiss cheese, lettuce and tomato) as well as soups, salads, cold sandwiches and desserts.

Each hot sandwich takes approximately four minutes to prepare from when the customer orders.

The Earl Enterprises business also operates the Buca di Beppo Italian eateries brand, which is set for expansion in the UK, as well as Planet Hollywood, with further movie-themed restaurants set to open overseas.
