The doors have swung open on entries for the Baking Industry Awards 2026, causing a ripple of excitement at bakeries across the country.

Now in its 39th year, the annual competition comprises 15 categories in which to honour the incredible individuals, teams, products, operations, and initiatives at all shapes and sizes of UK businesses.

That means whether you are an artisan bakery brand, a craft bakery with a chain of shops, a nationwide retailer or food-to-go operators, a large-scale manufacturer, or anything in between, you can find something to help showcase your achievements over the past year.

To check the criteria for each category, including the brand-new Bakery Leader of the Year, visit our dedicated event website: www.bakeryawards.co.uk.

Be wary of the entry deadline too – just a week away on Monday 18 May. Do you need any more convincing? Here are the top five reasons to enter this year’s awards:

Peer approval

The Baking Industry Awards is held in extremely high regard across the entire industry, having built up a solid reputation over the four decades since it was first launched.

One thing that commands such respect is its comprehensive judging process. While tailored to each category, it always features careful and considered scrutiny of entries – some involving product sampling, interviews, and site visits – conducted by a panel of experts including independent judges and representatives from the sponsors and British Baker.

“The Baking Industry Awards are a true celebration of the passion, craft and innovation that drive our industry forward,” commented Jason Geary, master baker at Geary’s Bakeries in Leicester which won Bakery Manufacturer of the Year 2025.

There’s also the fact that it culminates with a glamourous black-tie awards ceremony, which this year has moved to an even larger venue – the London Hilton on Park Lane – and takes place on Wednesday 25 November. This gives you the chance to be in the room with the biggest names in UK baking.

Benefitting business

The benefits of winning an award, or being named as a finalist, are substantial. Not only will it help reassure your existing customers about the capabilities of your brand, it can also create opportunities to drive sales upwards – potentially in completely new channels as well.

Linwood Raker, winner of the Sustainability Initiative of the Year category in 2024, said entering the Baking Industry Awards was one of the best decisions it ever made, noting that it “didn’t just give us a trophy, it opened doors”.

“The recognition elevated our brand, expanded our reach, and connected us with industry leaders we might never have met otherwise,” commented the coated paper specialist. “The exposure we’ve had since winning has been incredible. Customers, partners, and even new talent have sought us out because they saw our name associated with the awards.”

It can also lead to invites for other events such as the conferences run by the British Society of Baking. For example, reigning Baker of the Year Tona Erreguin of Imma the Bakery was among the speakers at the recent 2026 spring conference. Meanwhile, Rising Star Award winners from 2024 and 2025, Naomi Griffiths and Emily Anderson, joined the judging panel for Britain’s Best Cake 2026.

Speaking at the BSB conference, Erreguin said: “Winning has definitely helped our business. Every time we’ve won an award, we’ve had more people coming in, people who didn’t know us before… It’s really touching and great testament to the spotlight we get from the awards.”

Media frenzy

The press coverage of Baking Industry Awards finalists and winners extends beyond the pages of British Baker. Local newspapers, radio and TV stations often help to champion the accomplishments of those serving their communities, while stories are also run by regional and national media outlets.

Bakery Retailer of the Year 2025 winner Gail’s, for instance, had an article on its victory published by the Daily Mail, while the Manchester Evening News wrote about several of the 2025 finalists based in and around the city. Elsewhere, the Bournemouth Daily Echo heralded the pair of trophies that Patisserie Mark Bennett took back to Dorset, both won for outstanding products.

Following the completion of judging, this year’s category finalists will be revealed on British Baker in early September featuring comments that outline exactly why the businesses, teams, individuals, or products have been shortlisted. Winners are then announced live at the awards ceremony on 25 November – cue media frenzy.

Firms will be assisted in spreading news of their triumphs through a ‘Make the most of your win’ marketing pack which includes a press release, winner’s logos, and social media assets. Bako used these to the fullest, showing off its Supplier of the Year 2025 status on the homepage of its website along with its LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook accounts. Its press release also got picked up by several news sources.

Teaming with pride

Winner’s speeches onstage at the awards ceremony are kept brief but they often include shoutouts to the team members back at the bakery that have contributed towards the success. Companies are able to bring back shiny trophies to celebrate with their team and showcase to customers at their site. This can also provide employees with a sense of accomplishment in their work.

“Winning Bakery Manufacturer of the Year in 2025 was an incredibly proud moment for everyone at Geary’s and a testament to the dedication of our whole team,” said Jason Geary. “The recognition has given us a real boost and reinforced our commitment to raising the bar in British baking.”

Better view on operations

The process of crafting an entry for the Baking Industry Awards is always time well spent. That’s because every category is judged on various criteria which require detailed reports on different aspects of a business, person, or product.

Bakeries, therefore, need to take an in-depth look at their operations and developments and pick out the best bits to include in an entry. This can be extremely useful in identifying strengths (and weaknesses) of a business, helping to guide goals and ambitions for the future.
