High street food-to-go retailer Greggs is trialling its first low-calories bakes, under its Balanced Choice range.

The Spicy Beef & Chorizo, Fiery Vegetable Madras, and Chicken Fajita Bake are on trial in London and the south east of England. Each bake costs £1.30 and contains less than 400 calories.

The bakes went on trial the week commencing 14 February and the company says no end date has been set yet. However, it adds the outcome will help shape its future plans.

Greggs launched its Balanced Choice range in 2014 to provide a healthier option for the food-on-the-go market. It currently sells a range of flatbreads, sandwiches, salads, soups, porridge pots, fruit and drinks.

Greggs is famous for its sausage rolls and slices, and the new range offers consumers a similar product with less calories.

A spokesman said: “As an exciting extension to this range, we are currently trialling Balanced Choice savoury products across the south east region of England.

"Our aim is to continue to add to the Balanced Choice range, which offers a balance between the great tasting fresh food Greggs is famous for, yet with all products at fewer than 400 calories.”
