Rising ingredient costs prompts Greggs price hikes

Greggs has increased the price of its sausage rolls and breakfast baps in reaction to rising food ingredients costs.

The high street bakery chain has raised the price of its sausage rolls by 5p to 90p, while customers wanting extra servings of bacon, sausage or egg in a breakfast bap will pay £2.25 for a breakfast meal deal rather than the previous £2. Customers can still get a ‘basic’ breakfast bap with a meal deal for £2.

Consumers took to social media to voice their opinions on the price change stating: “A sausage roll from Greggs is now 90p!! Talk about the price of living going up.” Other comments include the hashtag #GreedyGreggs.

Greggs said that it had tried to mitigate industry-wide costs pressures, and any price increases were kept to a minimum.

“We are seeing significant rises in food ingredient costs and have managed to mitigate most of this impact,” said a Greggs spokesperson. “As a last resort we have increased the price of selected items including sausage rolls and the savoury deal.”

Greggs stated in May 2017 that its £2 breakfast offer helped drive sales by 7.5% across the business.
