Südzucker and DouxMatok to market 'breakthrough' sugar reduction system

Sugar supplier Südzucker has formed a partnership to market a system claimed to reduce the sugar content in products by up to 40%

The company has partnered with Israeli firm DouxMatok to commercialise a sugar reduction solution across Europe. The businesses will aim to drive launches of new products that they say will have substantially less sugar and with no compromise on taste.

DouxMatok has said it can reduce up to 40% of the sugar content in various food products while maintaining the same sugar sensory profile.

The patented sugar delivery technology loads sugar molecules on a mineral carrier, said to result in a more efficient delivery and enhanced sweetness perception.

The partnership is designed to help food companies address consumer demand for balanced nutrition, as well as ongoing pressure to reduce sugar content in food. In June, UK government body Public Health England said cakes, biscuits and other baked goods account for almost a quarter of children’s sugar intake.

Südzucker and DouxMatok are currently focusing on technology for scaling up production and hope to offer it to European food brands for use in product categories including chocolate, spreads, snack bars, biscuits, baked goods and candies.

More than 60% of consumers are seeking healthier, more balanced nutrition without avoiding sugar, said DouxMatok.
