Christmas is in full swing, as far as the major retailers are concerned, with Tesco, Waitrose, The Co-op, and Sainsbury’s among those to have unwrapped their festive food ranges.
There are hoards of new sweet and savoury products, and even a few which blur the line between the two, as retailers and bakers look to target a range of occasions during the build up to the big day.
Warming spices coupled with citrus and a splash of booze are a running theme throughout the sweet lines, with retailers also drawing inspiration from classic desserts and flavour combinations. Co-op, for example, has added Apple Crumble & Custard Blondie Cups and Orange & Almond Mincemeat Slices to its range. Waitrose, meanwhile, has added a Limoncello Fizz Panettone and Cranberry & Orange Pastel De Natas to its line-up.
“We know our customers love panettone and a tipple at Christmas, so I’m delighted to introduce our Limoncello Fizz Panettone – a light Italian cake with candied lemon peel and pockets of limoncello filling, infused with sparkling wine syrup,” explains Serena Jackson, partner & bakery product developer at Waitrose. ”It comes with a fizzy sherbet lemon sugar and a stencil for our customers to add a final flourish at home. If you don’t love dried fruit, this is a panettone you can get stuck into.”
When it comes to savoury lines, classic but indulgent flavours reign supreme although many have been taken into new formats. The Co-op, for example, has added a Turkey Feast Quiche and a Hog Roast Pizza to its offering, while Tesco has added Pigs in Blankets Yorkshire Puddings and a Winter Cranberry Pork Pie, and Sainsbury’s has rolled out Lobster Thermidor Crumpets.
