Brioche Pasquier has issued a recall of specific batches of its Pitch Chocolate and Hazelnut Brioches due to a risk of them containing pieces of plastic.
In a recall notice posted on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website on 7 February, the viennoiserie specialist said the precautionary measure had been taken because the presence of plastic pieces makes the product a potential choking hazard and therefore unsafe to eat.
Only six-packs of the branded sweet treats that have a best before date of 4 March 2026 and a batch code of UK 034 are affected by the recall.
Comprising soft brioche with a smooth chocolate & hazelnut filling, the product is sold at Asda and Tesco stores nationwide as well as via Ocado. Consumers who have purchased the items are advised not to eat them, and to contact Brioche Pasquier’s customer care team via their website or by email to technical@briochepasquier.com.
The bakery manufacturer also confirmed that no other batch codes nor other products from the same brand have been affected by the plastic contamination. The Pitch range of snackable brioche rolls also includes a choc chips version.
British Baker has reached out to Brioche Pasquier for further comment.
The French family-owned company has operated a production facility in Milton Keynes since 2015. It added an 80,000 sq ft extension in 2021 to increase capacity to over 2.5 million products per day.
Recent analysis by British Baker on bakery product recalls found that ‘foreign body’ contamination – ie. due to suspected or confirmed presence of metal, stones, plastic, or other physical contaminants – was the second most common reason for recalls, although the number was significantly below those for undeclared allergens. Over the past five years, there were 21 recalls issued due to foreign body contamination comapred to 76 for undeclared allergens.
However, 2024 saw a total of seven cases fall under the ‘Contamination - foreign body’, including Tesco mince pies recalled for possibly containing dry glue and Daylesford Organic recalling crispbreads and savoury biscuits due to the presence of moth larvae.
