Greggs is to launch a limited-edition ‘Greggsnut’ in stores, from tomorrow (6 September), as it seeks to capitalise on the popularity of the current Cronut craze.

The creation, will only be available in selected London stores until 1 October, is made from a combination of Greggs’ own layered pastry, formed into the shape of a doughnut, and is available in two flavours: summer berry & crème and caramel and pecan.

Greggs said it had taken its master bakers two months to perfect the recipe, which Paul Birchall, head of product research and development, claimed was a taste sensation.

Birchall said: “We saw how successful the Cronut was in New York and challenged ourselves to make a British version. We believe the Greggsnut could be the most exciting product launch at Greggs since the birth of the sausage roll and are hoping the combination of a Greggs own layered pastry shaped into a doughnut captures the taste buds of London.”

Earlier this summer London bakery Rinkoff’s and bakery ingredients supplier Zeelandia, both launched their own version of the Cronut, as bakeries across the globe have jumped on the craze.

The Greggsnut will be priced at £1.
