US-based chain Jersey Mike’s Subs is planning major international expansion with an ambition to open 400 stores in the UK and Ireland.
The company has signed a franchise agreement to support the expansion move with JM Submarines UK, a newly formed firm led by Jersey Mike’s founder Peter Cancro.
Having started working at the original Mike’s Sub Shop in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, in 1972 when he was just 14, Cancro purchased the location three years later and subsequently began franchising units in 1987. As CEO of the brand for nearly half a century, he has seen it grow it to over 3,200 locations across North America.
In early 2025, New York-based asset management firm Blackstone completed the acquisition of Jersey Mike’s in a transaction that valued it around $8bn (£6bn) including debt. Cancro was replaced in the leadership role by former Wingstop CEO Charlie Morrison but he transitioned to chairman of the board and remains a significant shareholder.
The strategic partnership with Cancro’s new London-based franchising business is said to underscore the brand’s commitment to thoughtful, quality-driven growth as it shares its authentic ‘A Sub Above’ experience with a global audience.
“This marks a pivotal milestone in Jersey Mike’s growth journey as we expand into the European market,” said Morrison. “We could not ask for a better partner than Peter to lead this market expansion.”
Cancro said he saw “tremendous potential” in the UK and Ireland markets. “I’m eager to personally operate the brand I love in regions that value quality and community as much as we do,” he added.

Jersey Mike’s is known for its deli-style subs filled with freshly sliced meats and cheeses and customisable salad ingredients. Among the top-selling items on its menu in the US are the Turkey & Provolone, Original Italian, and The Club Sub – all served cold – as well as the Mike’s Famous Philly hot sub. Sandwiches can be purchased as part of a bundle deal with a packet of crisps and drink, and there are also bakery sweet treats such as cookies, brownies, and gluten-free ‘Snickerdoodles’ (tangy cinnamon cookies).
Other sandwich brands targeting UK expansion include Sandwich Sandwich, which recently unveiled a new grab & go store concept; fellow US chain Which Wich Superior Sandwiches, which has appointed an exclusive franchise partner; and Joe & The Juice, which opened 16 new shops last year.
