Asda unveils summer 2022 cake and picnic range

Pancakes, brownies, and cheesecakes are just some of the inspirations for Asda’s summer celebration cake range for 2022.

The retailer has unveiled the sweet treats alongside a range of summer savoury items suitable for picnics and barbecues such as a Wensleydale Quiche and Chorizo Pork Pie.

“This is a year of celebrations with the upcoming Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, with traditional and nostalgic flavours taking centre stage,” said Jonathan Moore, senior director of food innovation and trends at Asda. “We have gone all out with our showstopping cakes, perfect for street parties and celebrations.”

Here are some of the standout bakery products in the line-up:

Pancake Cake – £12

This stack of pancakes is not what it seems. Cut inside and you’ll find layers of vanilla sponge with salted caramel sauce all decorated to look like a bacon, maple and butter topped stack.

Mini Coronation Chicken Pastry Crowns

In honour of the upcoming Platinum Jubilee, Asda has created these savoury snacks. They’re made with British chicken in a coronation sauce with apricot and sultanas all wrapped in puff pastry with a turmeric sprinkle.

Trifle Gateau Bar

Described as all the delicious flavours of trifle in a modern format, this gateau sees a light sponge cake layered and topped with cream mousse, strawberry sauce and decorated with edible confetti.

Neapolitan Celebration Cake – £12

Taking cues from the classic ice cream, this cake has madeira, chocolate and strawberry sponge layers covered in complementary flavoured frosting. It’s topped with sprinkles, a cone decoration and chocolate frosting to look like a melted ice cream.

Blonde Chocolate Cake – £13

Embracing the flavour of the moment, this cake boasts creamy caramel notes. Four layers of vanilla sponge are covered with blonde chocolate ganache and topped with Belgian chocolate shards.

Chorizo Pork Pie

Spanish chorizo meets a British staple. These bite-sized pork pies are made with tender pork and smoky chorizo all wrapped up in golden pastry.

Loaded Brownie Cake – £13

The latest hybrid baked good to hit the market is this indulgent Loaded Brownie Cake. It has three layers of brownie smothered in chocolate frosting and decorated with chocolate curls and balls.

Sundried Tomato & Feta Cheese Rolls

Adding a burst of flavour, colour and spice to picnics are the Sundried Tomato & Feta Cheese Rolls as part of Asda’s Extra Special range. They’re made with sundried tomatoes, cannellini beans and Greek barrel aged feta cheese wrapped in an all-butter puff pastry topped with an oat and chilli sprinkle.

Wensleydale Quiche

Asda said this quiche is inspired by the British summer and, as such, is packed full of garden vegetables with a butter enriched carrot pastry and cheese & chive topping.

Blueberry Cheesecake’d

Cake meets cheesecake in this mash-up. Featuring layers of vanilla sponge and blueberry jam, it’s covered in blueberry cream cheese frosting and finished with a biscuit crumb and freeze-dried raspberries.

BBQ Chicken Bao Buns

Bao buns are moving from the street food scene to the picnic blanket. These hand-assembled buns are fully streams and filled with shredded BBQ chicken breast before being topped with black sesame seeds.
