Jacob’s Bites, Pladis

Created to leverage key sharing occasions while helping to reinvigorate the savoury snacking category, the new Jacob’s Bites range has been launched in four popular flavour combinations – Mature Cheddar & Caramelised Onion, Red Leicester, Sweet Chilli & Sour Cream, and Smoked Paprika.

Presented in a fully recyclable box (rsp: £2, 125g), the oven-baked biscuits were debuted at Tesco stores before a wider rollout across major multiples, convenience stores and wholesalers.

“Brits are snacking more than ever, and this means more and more shoppers are looking for quick, grab-and-go options for sharing, but existing savoury biscuits formats aren’t fit for purpose when it comes to these new snacking moments,” commented Asli Akman, marketing director – savoury at Pladis UK&I.

“As a result, the category currently under-trades in almost two thirds (64%) of all savoury snack occasions [Kantar data for 52 weeks to 3 September 2024], which means there’s a huge growth opportunity for the taking,” Akman added.

Pladis, owner of the 170-year-old Jacob’s brand, previously registered the ‘Jacob’s Bites’ trade name along with ‘McVitie’s Zero’, a reduced sugar biscuit range that has yet to emerge in the UK although it is available in Turkey.

World Flavours Parcels, Pukka

A trio of new pastry parcels inspired by iconic (and spicy) dishes from across the globe has been unveiled by Pukka which it says is in a bid to bring innovative, full-on flavour to the typically functional savoury pastry category.

Included in the world flavours line-up are Jamaican Jerk Chicken, Mexican Beef, and Indian Spiced Vegetable. Encased in puff pastry to offer the convenience of a handheld, on-the-go product, the 130g parcels are priced at £1.50 each and will be rolled out at Morrisons stores from 9 October followed by Tesco, Asda, and Ocado from November. They will also go out to convenience and wholesale channels.

“Shoppers typically perceive handheld savoury pastries as a convenient way to refuel, but we’ve identified a gap in the market to bring fun and full-on flavour back to the category with our world flavours parcels,” expressed Pukka CEO Issac Fisher, who assumed the leadership role in May and announced a five-year plan to supercharge growth.

Here’s more on each flavour:

  • Jamaican Jerk Chicken Parcel – seasoned Jerk chicken, sweet potato, and black turtle beans with a spicy sauce; pastry is topped with a visual blast of habanero, star anise, turmeric and allspice
  • Mexican Beef Parcel – minced beef, kidney beans, peppers, and sweetcorn; parcel is sprinkled with an authentic array of cumin, smoked paprika, chipotle chilli, black pepper and a hint of ground clove
  • Indian Spiced Vegetable Parcel – potato, peas, cauliflower, and spinach combined with garam masala, coriander, and cumin; pastry topped with Nigella seeds, fenugreek, cumin, coriander, and a pinch of turmeric.

Pukka NPD is said to have added £4.5m to the savoury pastry category and brand (Circana GB Supermarkets data, 52 weeks to 4 August 2024), with innovations over the past year including a Cheese & Bacon Toastie Slice, a Doner Kebab Pie, and an All Day Breakfast Slice.

The sandwich chain has brought back its Jalapeno Cheese Bread to UK stores after a five-year hiatus.

The spicy bakery option forms part of Subway’s new Wild & Mild menu launched earlier this month that also includes Furious Chicken and Steak Texicana flavours of Signature Series subs. These are available as either Footlong or six-inch sandwiches, wraps or salads.

Back in June, Subway came out with a new range of elongated sweet and savoury bakery items, dubbed Footlong Sidekicks, across its UK and Ireland restaurants. It also revealed investment in a major revamp to its digital customer experience including a new app, loyalty programme, and self-service kiosks.
